Why People Start and Why They Should Stop

The epidemic of smoking-related diseases is one that only the potential victims can abolish. Smoking is among the most common habits in the Western world and this dangerous habit will kill a large number of those who engage in it.

It is amazing to think that people would continue to smoke after their first experimental cigarette which causes coughing and nausea. However, the majority of smokers enjoy the taste and smell of tobacco smoke and so they continue on with this potentially lethal habit. Sometimes the ritual of smoking creates pleasure and relaxation itself. For some people, it is a social habit and makes them feel part of the crowd. This is particularly so of people who are shy. Having something to do with their hands when in company helps them to appear more in control and self-confident.

Smokers say that smoking settles their nerves when they are stressed. Some say it also stimulates them and, in both cases, there is some truth. This is due to the nicotine or more precisely, the dose of nicotine as well as other factors. There is also a genuine physical addiction to nicotine so that when the person concerned is not able to get the drug, he or she suffers from withdrawal symptoms which are relieved only by having another cigarette.

A person can have a psychological addiction to smoking as well as the physical addiction. Although the person does not really need that cigarette, he or she misses the perceived enjoyment it used to bring. It has often become such an ingrained habit that the smoker lights up automatically without any thought about it.

In recent years, public opinion against smoking has resulted in policies to restrict the areas where smokers can engage in their habit. Many hotels, restaurants, shopping centres and workplaces have become no-smoking zones. In many places, governments are claiming damages from the billion-dollar tobacco industry to finance the ever growing costs of healthcare for smoking-related diseases.

There is definitely a strong correlation between children’s smoking and the smoking habits of parents and older siblings. The family bond and the desire to be like their parents is the likely cause of this. As young children, many are very disapproving of their parents smoking habits but by the early teens, their thinking begins to change. Often, these young people identify drinking and smoking with the ideal of being an adult.

Early studies just after World War II, concluded that the main cause of lung cancer was definitely cigarette smoking. After comparing a number of variables, it was concluded that only one in two hundred male lung cancer patients were nonsmokers with a similar level of statistics found among women. Other conclusions were that the chances of dying from lung cancer increased with heavier smoking habits. More recent studies have shown that smoking is also a contributory factor in diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and coronary heart disease. It has also been shown that smokers generally live a shorter lifespan than nonsmokers..

Many people are unaware that it is the toxic substances in the vaporized tar that causes the damage to smokers rather than the nicotine. These tars contain thousands of toxic chemicals, some of which are known carcinogenics. Other interesting factors include the fact that smokers are twice as likely to die before retirement age as nonsmokers. There is also some evidence that filter-tipped cigarettes reduce the risk of disease minimally but not enough to consider them a safe option.

Another area of great concern is that of passive smoking. Studies have shown that the cigarette smoke drifting from the burning end of a cigarette contains twice as much carcinogenic tar as that inhaled by the smoker.

The risks to an unborn baby of a smoking mother are also something of which people need to be aware. These mothers have a higher rate of miscarriages and stillbirths than do nonsmoking mothers.

Giving up the cigarettes is easier said than done. There are many products available which may help but, ultimately, it is a battle that the smoker needs to fight for him or her self. Resisting the temptation to have a cigarette, particularly in times of stress, is crucial. Many people give up over and over again but end up back on the smokes. For this reason, it is important to have a plan and to decide, once and for all, that it is the time to give it up. No one is saying it will be easy but millions give up every year so it can be done.

Smoking is My Identity

I am a smoker. I have been a smoker for over 30 years, 37 to be exact. Back in the day, smoking didn’t have the harmful results, or so we thought. We weren’t bothering anyone, and everyone smoked. It was the pause that refreshes. You know what I mean. Come on, we were sucked into the marketing campaign, hook, line and sinker. But that was then and this is now. Smoking is bad for you and everyone around you. The problem is I am an addict and I can’t quit. You could make it illegal; I will still find a way. Even when you tell me I can’t smoke on your property, I will still find a way. That is what addiction is, a force that will drive you.

It is part of my budget, part of my lifestyle statement. It is who I am. You see me all over the place. I go only to coffee shops where I can smoke. I slid out of parties to stand out side with all the other smokers. Off to the side of course, but still I find a place to smoke. Aren’t I disgusting hiding in my garage because it is raining outside, just to have a smoke? I don’t fancy myself the Marlboro Man, or Joe Camel. I am just me, and this is what I do, smoke that cigarette.

I keep trying to quit, but nothing seems to work. The patch worked for my friend, so 45 dollars later I have a patch stuck to my arm. I snuck out behind my house and hung the patch on the wall while I smoked a cigarette. One cigarette that I bought at the store for 50 cents. I figured that the arm was not sensitive to the nicotine, so I stuck it on my tummy. Half hour later I am ripping my clothes off to get that patch off my skin. Not easy when you are driving down the freeway at 75 miles per hour. I pulled off and bought a pack of cigarettes.

Then there was the gum. I had a friend that quite using the gum, so I put down another $45 dollars and chewed, and chewed, and chewed. The pepper burned my mouth, and my cravings increased. I was a wild woman. If you were breathing, I was yelling at you. So I bought a pack of cigarettes, because I had to go to work. And they do not understand when you are screaming at your customers because you need a cigarette.

I have tried it all from will power to medication, and now I am down to it is my identity. I couldn’t possibly admit that I am your garden variety addict. Still searching for a real answer to my addiction. I figure I have been good for about 4 months now. Don’t you wish you could say that? For the most part a pack will last me about a week. That is fabulous considering a pack a day for awhile was pretty good.

So how do I maintain my identity, and hang out with non smokers? Easy, I switched to an alternative smoking device. For lack of a better word, it is an electric cigarette. I charge it at night along with the cell phone, and it is ready for me the next morning. I have my coffee and a few drags off it, and I am good for most of the day. Every now again, like when I am paying bills or listening to politicians tell me how much money they are going to pull out of me, I need to have a real cigarette.

Now I have a choice though. And where I am not telling myself to stop, I am not obsessing over the smoking. It actually works out to give me more time doing the things I enjoy, like going to the movies. Yeah, I was the one that always had to sneak out and grab a smoke and missed the best parts. With the electric cigarette, from myinlife.com/m4s. I just smoke away, and no one even knows. There is no smell, no lighters, and no butts.

Causes Of Smoking

Many people believe that the causes of smoking are well known, but in fact they vary greatly from smoker to smoker. A lot of individuals think that the only factor that smokers continue with their behavior is as a result of the bodily drug addiction, however this is not the situation. Numerous cigarette smokers, in fact, are not seriously literally addicted. Nicotine can be a powerful addiction, but it doesn’t affect everyone the same. Some smokers proceed smoking not as a result of a bodily dependence, however a lot more as a result of the mental one. They are dependent on cigarettes to relax, and have a hard time giving up this habit.

If you want to stop smoking, you have to understand what reasons you started for. In my case, the causes of cigarette smoking were pretty normal of an American teenager: I wished to be awesome. My pals and I would certainly head out, shoot pool, and have a few cigarettes together. It was loosening up, and it made us seem like we were rebelling. It was a great social bonding experience, and I came to link cigarettes with happy times. This is why it was so difficult for me to quit smoking: I had so many positive experiences with it.

When I lastly decided to stop smoking, I learned regarding routine, one of the worst causes of smoking cigarettes. Physically I was fine. I really felt a little bit nervous, and I didn’t have the extreme nicotine yearnings that some cigarette smokers talk about.

What made it complicated, nevertheless, was the practice of the daily routine. There are numerous times in the day when I wanted to light up a cigarette. I would have a smoke very first thing in the early morning before work, at lunch time, at night over a mug of coffee — you get the idea. It was routine more than anything else that was the why smoking cigarettes in my case caused my addiction. I didn’t have to break a physical dependence, and I did need to damage something virtually as complicated– the force of daily use.

Whatever the causes of smoking in your life, there are a lot of tools that help. Nicotine vapor is a great aid for some smokers, because it allows them to take the edge off of the nicotine craving that many people feel. Stop smoking support groups are also really useful, although they aren’t for everyone. As with anything else, the more information you have the better. If you want to quit smoking, there are more tools compared to ever to assist you.

What is the Best Method to Stop Smoking

A question that most smokers who are considering quitting smoking ask is “What is the best method to stop smoking?” There are millions of people who want to stop smoking. The health problems that smoking can cause are well known, but people are not able to quit because of the highly addictive nature of nicotine, which is in tobacco. Common quit smoking aids which replace the nicotine without smoking, include gum, lozenges, and patches. These aids which are referred to as ” Nicotine Replacement Therapy Products” do help satisfy the craving for nicotine.

The problem for many is, the habit of smoking is an overall “experience”. It’s not only the nicotine. Smokers also like the sensation of raising a cigarette to their mouth and inhaling and exhaling the smoke. The act of smoking gets linked to a pleasurable experience like having a smoke with a good cup of coffee, or after a good meal. The “experience” along with the nicotine, make cigarette smoking an extremely difficult habit to break.

There is a fairly new product on the market that is gaining in popularity. It’s called an electronic cigarette and I think it makes a lot of sense as a method to stop smoking. The electronic cigarette is a battery operated cigarette that gives smokers the feeling of smoking a regular cigarette without all the harmful toxins. The electronic cigarette looks and feels very similar to a regular cigarette. It has a chamber that turns pure liquid nicotine into a puff of vapor giving the sense of smoking a regular cigarette, without all the chemicals that are present in regular cigarette smoke. Smokers get the nicotine and the smoking “experience” without all the health risks of cigarette smoking.

Electronic Cigarettes contain nicotine cartridges which are interchangeable and available in different strengths. This allows a person to gradually reduce the amount of nicotine they consume by switching to cartridges with less nicotine content. The cost of electronic cigarettes is much less than regular tobacco products.

Although electronic cigarettes are much healthier than tobacco, nicotine is very addictive. If you’re not a smoker, I definitely would not start. If you’re an adult who already smokes and you’re looking for a way to reduce the amount, or quit, I would recommend looking into e- cigarettes

Provide Adequate Air Circulation

Adequate air ventilation is essential for good orchid health. In nature, most orchids are found in the tops of trees where there is constant air circulation. Indoor orchids are exposed to pollution from various sources such as cooking vapors, cigarette smoke, room deodorizers, and aerosol sprays which are all harmful to your orchids. Even something as seemingly harmless as a box of apples produces a substance called ethylene which is known to cause orchids’ sepals to wilt.

Without adequate ventilation, water trapped between leaves will not evaporate. The stagnant water provides a moist environment for various pathogens to thrive. Mold and fungi love this stagnant moisture.

A lack of ventilation also means that there isn’t a continuous supply of “fresh” carbon dioxide for the orchids to absorb, which they need just as much as water or sunlight for growth.

Air ventilation also cools orchid leaves heated by too much sunlight or high intensity indoor lights, thus increasing the orchid’s capacity to withstand excess heat and light.

Indeed, the importance of good ventilation for your orchids cannot be stressed enough. To ensure adequate ventilation, your orchids should be placed on a tray beside an open window if the weather allows for it. During winter, orchids should be gently ventilated with an oscillating or ceiling fan and the windows kept closed, as cold wind can cause the buds to fall.

Good ventilation prevents a variety of orchid problems and is easily obtained through the variety of ceiling and floor fans that are available today.

How to Stop Smoking

Learning to smoke cigarettes was the hardest and most miserable task you undertook when you were young! Smoking cigarettes was something that you had to learn to do. Learning to smoke took some persistence and putting up with the misery of coughing and hacking after every pull on a cigarette. What were you mastering? You were learning to suppress your body’s natural protective responses to hot, polluted smoke going into your clean, pure lungs. Lungs created for clean air only! You were controlling your body’s reaction with your mind!

When people think about trying to quit cigarettes, they realize it’s in the best interest of their health to quit. They understand the health and fitness hazards of smoking. They know how expensive it is to smoke. They have every smart valid reason to quit cigarettes. Yet, many can’t do it! What is the reason for this dilemma? Because smoking the cigarette is the end to a means. That ends to a means is to satisfy a physical craving, calm your nerves, keep you from eating, whatever reason you use to justify the smoking. It is really the mechanism, the suppression of the body’s defensives, that the smoker has spent so much time creating that allows for them and now causes the smoker to experience the urge to smoke. If you are able to quit cigarettes but don’t remove this body suppression trigger, the best you can hope for is to be an ex-smoker. What exactly is an ex-smoker? An ex-smoker is a person who has smoked in the past and has taken a break from smoking, but will probably resume smoking in the future.

The defense mechanism that you spent years building up remains functioning. It has become your ogre that you’ve forgotten how to be in charge of! You’ve erased from your memory why you created the ogre initially, because it was so long ago! You may overcome it and banish it for awhile, but it’s constantly pushing to break free. Eventually it will break free and you will resume smoking again. The cigarette is not the ogre. It is the mechanism you’ve created within your brain that compels you to smoke the cigarette that is the ogre.

Semiconductor Technology

Article Summary.

The vast majority of the personal breathalyzers sold in pharmacies, mass market retailers and through the internet use “semiconductor technology” for sensing and measuring the breath alcohol content (BAC). Semiconductor devices are inappropriate for those interested in BAC measurement. This article explains why semiconductor breathalyzers should not be trusted for accurate and reliable BAC measurement.

What is semiconductor breathalyzer technology?

In semiconductor breath testers the alcohol sensor is formed from an inexpensive bead of tin metal oxide which must be heated to around 300 °C in order to function. A voltage is applied to produce a current across the sensor. When alcohol and other airborne substances contact the sensor, the resistance changes and so too the electrical current. The change in current is used to measure the breath alcohol content (BAC).

How selective are semiconductor alcohol sensors?

The answer is, not very. The tin oxide sensor cannot distinguish between alcohol and other airborne substances such as gasoline vapor, cigarette smoke, hairspray, breath acetone and a wide variety of other airborne substances. These other substances alone or mixed with breath alcohol will also trigger the sensor easily causing what’s called “false positives.” In other words, the device will sense alcohol even when none is present.

Semiconductor breathalyzers are short lived.

The more you use a semiconductor breathalyzer the shorter its lifespan and the more inaccurate it becomes. Semiconductor sensors rarely last longer than a year because the sensor is easily contaminated by airborne contaminants such as cigarette smoke. Additionally, sensor saturation with alcohol can rapidly destabilize the semiconductor device and throw-off the results.

Semiconductor Accuracy and Precision

Semiconductor technology is inherently inaccurate. At best these breathalyzers can detect the presence of alcohol but they can cannot provide accurate BAC measurement. They will read high, low or correctly and you’ll never know which. If you are close to the legal driving limit of.08BAC, it is quite easy to get readings that vary from.04 BAC to.12 BAC and everywhere in between. The possible marging of error is so wide as to render these devices useless and possibly dangerous if relied upon.

How can I Identify a Semiconductor Breathalyzer?

You can be pretty confident that any personal breathalyzer sold for under $150.00 is a semiconductor device. Most of these products do not identify the technology on the packaging but usually find reference “Semiconductor” in the product specifications.

Are all Breathalyzers to be Avoided?

Professional handheld breathalyzers, such as those used by Law Enforcement do not use semiconductor technology. Professional breath alcohol instruments use “fuel cell technology.” Developed and refined over many years, this technology is more precise, accurate and reliable. Recently, law enforcement manufacturer’s have introduced personal testers that use fuel cell technology.

Why has Nothing Been Done to Remove Semiconductor Alcohol Testers from the Market?

Virtually all semi-conductor breath testers are imported from China, Taiwan or Korea. Many are not approved by the appropriate regulatory authorities before being sold. Those approved are passed as alcohol screeners, meaning they can detect the presence of alcohol but this does not ensure accuracy. No semiconductor alcohol tester has ever been approved for evidential use (to stand-up in a court of law) by any State Law Enforcement Agency or by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The manufacturers are far removed from the hazards of these units, the distributors cover themselves with fine print and the retailers have not stepped up. Buyer beware.

Here’s a Stop Smoking Tip

Sure, you’ve heard it all before, and, of course, the title of this article is a bit pious, but, really…STOP!  That’s your stop smoking tip…I mean, look: do you want some information that’s really gonna help you quit smoking, or do you want to have your fear played-in to to SELL you some crap?  You’re reading this because you’re sick of smoking and feel helpless about stopping.

Well, if you’re gonna really get to the point where you can stop smoking, I can tell you right now, it isn’t going to happen because of some patches, gum, water vapor cigarette, pills, potions, or other gadgets.  Here’s why: they’re all junk focused on propping-up everything you’ve heard about how hard it is to break the smoking addiction.  If you want to achieve any goal in life, you’ll have to develop a good reason why you want it if you ever to hope to accomplish it.

That’s the trick, that’s your secret right there.  Your intention, which is derived from your beliefs, dictates your results.  If you want to stop smoking, you have to engage your mind.

Set your intentions on why you want to quit…or why you HAVE TO quit.  When you come up with a big enough reason, the work is done because its just a matter of time.  5 years ago I made the determination to stop smoking cigarettes and as of that day, I was done.

You know what took all the time to actually quit?  All the time leading up to making the decision to quit, equipped with the WHY I had (or wanted) to.  There were no physical symptoms or withdrawals, no cravings, no worrying…I just DID IT, and you can, too.

The determining factor is the reasoning behind your desire to quit.  You feel what its doing to you…its common knowledge now.  We both know that as bad as cigarettes are for you…as deadly as they, in point of fact, are, you still suck them down like there’s no tomorrow because you CAN’T STOP – that’s how sick it is, yet it’s just not been a big enough reason for you to finally stop.

The only stop smoking tip you need is this: you control when you stop by creating a big enough reason why you want to (or have to) stop, and that will give you absolutely all the momentum you need to do it!  The same ideal applies when it comes to losing weight or making more money…nothing will ever happen without conscious, proactive decisions being made.  You can quit smoking today, and you will….IF you choose to.

Are Smoking, Drugs Or Drinking a No-No For Singers

A singer uses their human body as a musical instrument & thus it is crucial for a singer to stay in the best health possible.

Smoking, marijuana, drugs and alcohol are all known to affect the human body.

For singers, these factors have a very huge impact upon their vocal cords, singing voice & musical ability. The impact is mostly negative…

Let’s first cover smoking cigarettes, cigars, hookah, those new-trendy electric vaporized cigarettes & marijuana.

Before we do that, it is important to understand that ANY type of smoke is harmful to the vocal cords, the lungs & the body. Smoke dehydrates the body which eventually dehydrates the vocal cords themselves, it also reduces the flexibility of the vocal cords which makes it harder to coordinate the vocal cords. In addition, smoke from ANY type of smoking- whether it’s hookah or marijuana damages the tissues of the vocal cords gradually.

Now that we’ve established the fact that any type of smoking is harmful to the voice. Lets cover how each different type of smoking affects the voice.

Cigarettes- Optimal lung function is crucial in singers. Tobacco, nicotine & tar are all known to harm the lungs. In addition, there are over 300 different types of chemicals which are poisonous, toxic & carcinogenic to the body found in cigarettes. These chemicals affect every little CELL in the body which includes the vocal cords, voice box & the lungs of a singer.

Cigars- Are not meant to be inhaled but the large amount of unfiltered smoke produced & tobacco found in cigars cancels out any “protection” from not inhaling the smoke. The smoke definitely reaches the lungs & causes significant harm due to the large amount of unfiltered smoke. The vocal cords are most affected from cigars. Ever notice why most cigar smokers have a very raspy & beat up voice?

Hookah- This smoking trend has gained popularity among the young generation of college students & high school students. If you are a singer, hookah is extremely harmful. Despite the never-ending myth that hookah is completely harmless since it has no tobacco, hookah IS harmful. I’ve looked up all the scientific studies & research into this, a hookah produces large amounts of toxic substances which gradually ruins health BUT… for singers it is very harsh on the voice & quickly stiffens, dehydrates & toughens the vocal cords. The amount of smoke & chemicals produced from hookah are all very harmful to the vocal cords, even more so than cigars & cigarettes.

Electric Vaporized Cigarettes, Cigars, & Pipes- This new technology uses vaporized smoke produced by either food additives & contains nicotine with no tobacco. So far the health effects of this type of smoking are unknown & not studied. However nicotine is harmful to the body. My advice is to simply avoid this type of smoking even if you use no nicotine to smoke because the food additives used to produce the vaporized smoke could be harmful to the lungs & vocal cords. In other words, better stay safe than sorry.

Smoking is not an option for singers, especially for those looking for a career in singing, it IS deadly. It will age you quicker, ruin your voice gradually, halt any improvement you might have seen from vocal lessons, & cause a loads of problems to your health.

But…

What about marijuana? Many singers, musicians & entertainers use all types of drugs including marijuana to “enhance” their creativity. They certainly DO enhance their creativity & their talents skyrocket- different drug substances effect each person differently. However this positive effects are SHORT-TERM. Gradually a higher drug dose will be needed to sustain the amount of creativity in music & singing before attained from a smaller dose.

In addition, side effects will occur to the health physically & mentally.

Singers, Musicians & Entertainers can accomplish the amount of creativity & talent they get from drugs use, long term by learning how to meditate.

This is another topic & subject on its own.

But getting back to drugs…

For serious singers it is not an option at all! I can understand why many famous singers have done drugs. I won’t point any names but you must understand that these effects are only obtained when you are on the drugs & you will need more drugs to sustain the positive creative effects. Your mental, physical & emotional health will start taking a toll.

If you are looking at a career, you may have a few hit singles from the result of your drug-induced creativity but that does NOT seem all very impressive…When you realize that you CAN accomplish the same amount of creativity by learning how to do it naturally without the use of drugs.

Moving on to alcohol…this again has the same side effect & consequences as drugs if abused. Alcohol drunk responsibly & in reasonable amounts will not harm a singer.

Coming to the conclusion, is smoking, drugs or drinking irresponsibly acceptable for singers?

From a subjective point of view you can certainly argue it to your favor BUT….from a OBJECTIVE point of view it defiantly is not recommended for the serious singer, performer, entertainer and/or musician.

I hope any singers may take this piece of advice for their own good.

Why Do People Start Smoking

Smoking is extremely common, extremely bad for you, and it unfortunately it can be extremely hard to stop smoking once you start. When you find out about all the crazy chemicals that are contained in cigarettes (no, they’re not organic!) and how they can cause lung cancer, other cancers, together with an array of other deadly medical problems, it causes one to wonder why someone would ever start smoking.

Well there are quite a few different reasons that folk go ahead with smoking first cig, which is obviously what gets them started in the first place. When kids are at school they are really inclined to fall for peer pressure because if some other person is doing it, they want to feel cool and slot in and don’t want to be picked on.

This is the age in fact where the bulk of people start smoking because this is the first time that they try it, and even if they try smoking first cigarette and feel sick for example and then don’t try it again for a while, they are still rather more likely than others to start over for good in the future.

Are Smokers Still Thought Of As Cool?

Another reason that many folks start smoking first cigarette is due to the image that it portrays. A lot of people feel extraordinarily dignified and sophisticated when they’re holding a cigarette, while others feel that it gives them that bad boy look and though they are going to be more attractive to girls.

In fact, in studies that have been done, it shows that very few people are actually drawn to the image of somebody smoking and so smoking first cigarette would really not make sense here, unless you go back to the time of the 1950s as an example where it seemed as though pretty much everyone smoked and it was actually the cool thing to do.

Why You should Not Start Smoking – And Why It Is Not Ever too Late To Kick The Smoking Habit

Of course there are tons of different reasons as to the reasons why a person could start smoking, but there are even more as to the reasons why you should stop smoking.|No matter what your reasons for starting smoking, there are a lot of reasons to stop smoking now!|You probably had many reasons for smoking the first cigarette, but you have many more reasons to stop smoking now!} Smoke odor is another reason (that’s not health related) to quit smoking. When you stop smoking, you’ll stop permeating your hair, mouth, clothes, house, and car with the smell of cigarette smoke. There are lots of different ways to stop smoking: Stop smoking hypnosis, wearing a nicotine patch, or blowing through water vapor cigarettes. Which stop smoking method is right for you depends on a variety of factors including your personality and how often you smoke. Whic h method will make it easiest for you to stop smoking is hard to say – it depends on you, your health, and how often you currently smoke. Generally speaking, the less frequently you smoke, the easier it will be for you to stop smoking all together.

One idea is to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke each day by 1 cigarette every week. If you normally smoke 10/day, in 10 weeks you could be down to smoking zero! Try different methods to quit smoking to see which will be most effective for you. Some people have to try to quit more than once before they are able to stop smoking altogether.Stay the course – it’s not easy to stop smoking, but it’s so important for your future health and happiness! Once you are successful at giving up cigarettes, you’ll feel great about that choice for the rest of your life!
